The Experience

The day starts with Echmiadzin Mother Cathedral, the main cathedral of the Armenian Apostolic Church and the first Christian cathedral ever built—now a UNESCO site you'll see from outside due to ongoing reconstruction. From there, the route takes you to two smaller churches within Echmiadzin: St. Hripsime and St. Gayane, both built to honor Christian women-martyrs who fled Rome with their abbess Gayane. The architecture of St. Hripsime, a cross-cupola design, shows the refinement Armenian builders had already achieved by the 7th century.

Next is Zvartnots, the medieval temple of St. Gregory, built in the 7th century and once one of the tallest structures of its time at 45–49 meters. Today only ruins remain, but they're substantial enough to convey the scale and ambition of the original. The reconstruction model designed by architect Toros Toramanyan was so precise that when a 20th-century bas-relief from St. Chapelle in Paris was discovered—showing Zvartnots alongside Noah's Ark—it matched his design exactly, proving what had seemed impossible to build in that era was real.

Garni temple stands alone as Armenia's only surviving pagan temple, a blend of Greco-Roman and Armenian styles built in the first century AD and dedicated to the sun god. After Armenia adopted Christianity in 301, the temple lost its religious function, but the fortress became a royal summer residence. Ruins of the royal palace and a bathroom with mosaic work still stand nearby. From Garni, the route continues to Geghard monastery, a 13th-century masterpiece where some churches are carved directly into the rock face. The lance said to have pierced Christ's side was kept here for centuries, and the complex's architecture makes it renowned for the acoustics of spiritual singing. The site is dense with khachkars (carved cross-stones) and sculptural detail throughout.
