The experience
You start an hour outside Yerevan at Khor Virap Monastery, built on the site of a royal prison where Saint Gregory the Illuminator spent 13 years. The name means "deep dungeon," and the monastery sits on a high plateau facing Mt. Ararat across the border: the mountain that defines Armenia's skyline and appears on its flag. From here the tour moves to Garni Temple, the only standing pagan temple in the post-Soviet region, dating to 77 AD and built to honor the sun god Mihr. The site holds a Roman bathhouse with a mosaic of 30,000 stone pieces and ruins of a royal palace from the third century.
The Symphony of Stones, a gorge near Garni carved by volcanic activity over millennia, sits between the temple and your final stop, though the visit depends on weather. Geghard Monastery, the day's last site, is partly built into solid rock and represents the 13th-century Golden Age of Armenian architecture. The name refers to the Holy Lance said to have pierced Jesus. The monastery kept it for five centuries. The complex is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the architect's work cutting a church into the mountainside while following Armenian building rules is the technical heart of the place. Charents Arch, overlooking the Ararat Valley, closes the day with a view back across the landscape you've crossed.
The vehicle is air-conditioned and pickup comes from your hotel. Water is provided on board, and WiFi is available. A guide who speaks English or Russian can be added depending on which option you choose. Without a guide, groups can range from four to fifteen passengers. Entrance fees to each site are paid separately at the gate.
