The Experience

The day starts early from El Calafate with hotel pickup, heading south on unpaved roads toward the Cancha Carrera border crossing — a drive of roughly three and a half hours in a 4x4 overland truck built for both asphalt and rough terrain. The vehicle's design means faster travel on paved sections and better grip on the shortcut route, so the border crossing happens around 10:30 am. Your guide handles customs procedures, and you stop at El Ovejero for restrooms, money exchange and the park entrance fee (if you've added it to your booking).

Once inside the park, the truck follows a route through the south side where the landscape shifts between granite mountains, valleys and glaciers. You make several stops — some from the vehicle, some with short walks — to see Lago Sarmiento, Laguna Amarga where the Paine Towers reflect in turquoise water, and Cascada Paine, where lunch happens outdoors. The park is home to guanacos, foxes, ostriches, condors and occasionally pumas, animals that have become more visible in recent seasons. Salto Grande waterfall is the start of a walk to the lower viewpoint of Lago Nordenskjöld, where the waterfall drops between two lakes and creates rainbows on windy days — this is one of the windiest places on earth, so the force of the Patagonian wind is something you feel. The final stop is Pehoe Lake Mirador, the most photographed point in the park, where the Horns, French Valley, Paine Grande Glacier and the lake itself all appear in one frame. From around 4:30 pm, the truck heads back to the border and then to El Calafate.

The tour runs 14 hours total and includes Wi-Fi, air conditioning, a boxed lunch and free hotel pickup and drop-off. Your guide speaks English or Spanish. Children from age 3 are welcome, and the walks are low-difficulty with minimal physical demand, though the long day and unpaved roads mean it's not suitable for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health or pregnancy.

What's the difference between the three options for this tour?

You can book the Paine in Overland 4x4 (the standard option in a 4x4 truck), the Paine Overland ending in Chile (which means you stay in Chile overnight rather than returning to El Calafate the same day), or the Paine in Conventional Bus (a larger shared bus instead of the 4x4). The 4x4 options offer better performance on unpaved roads and smaller group sizes; the bus option is more economical.

Do I need to pay the park entrance fee separately?

The Torres del Paine National Park entrance fee is optional and added at checkout. If you include it, your guide will help you pay at Portería Laguna Amarga around 1 pm, and you can use US dollars or euros (in perfect condition) between October 1 and April 30. The operator expects the fee may move to online payment in future seasons.
