Step-by-step itinerary
4WD tour and lunch at Estancia Huyliche
- Ascend Huyliche mountain range
- Spot native wildlife in canyon
- Reach the First Balcony viewpoint
- Visit upper balconies for panoramic views
- Admire Andean Condor flight
- Choose descent: 4x4, trekking, or zip line
- Arrive at Estancia Huyliche for lunch
The experience
The day starts with a 4WD ascent through the Huyliche mountain range, where the terrain shifts from the slopes of Calafate Stream Canyon (home to guanacos, foxes and Andean condors) up a winding path past erratic blocks left behind by glaciers. The route climbs to the First Balcony, then continues to the upper balconies where the view opens to the Andes, the Patagonian Continental Ice and all the arms of Lake Argentino. The balconies sit above condor nests, making this an ideal spot to watch the majestic flight of the largest bird in Continental Patagonia.
From the top, you choose how to descend. The zipline option drops you toward Estancia Huyliche. Trekking and 4WD descents also lead there. All three routes converge at the estancia for lunch: meat empanada, veal casserole with vegetarian and celiac options available, plus dessert and a drink (water, juice or wine). A professional bilingual guide leads the entire experience, and hotel pickup and drop-off are included.
