The Experience

The day starts at 6:30 am from the office in Salta, heading north on National Route 9 toward the Quebrada de Humahuaca. The first stop is Purmamarca, where you get 30 minutes to walk the village square and see the adobe houses, the church of St. Rose of Lima, and the Hill of the Seven Colors rising behind it. From there the route passes through Maimará, where the mountainside shifts into the Painter's Palette—bands of mineral color that shift as the light moves across the rock face.

In Tilcara you have time to walk the town itself, then the tour continues to Huacalera to see the monolith marking the Tropic of Capricorn. By midday you reach Humahuaca, where you stop for lunch (on your own) and can visit the Monument to the Inca and the Heroes of Independence. The final destination is the Serranía del Hornocal, also called Cerro de los 14 Colores—the 14-color mountain. The geological layers here date to the end of the Cretaceous, 75 million years ago, and the mineral deposits create the color bands that made the site famous enough to be filmed for the movie "Mi Obra Maestra."

The vehicle is air-conditioned and the guide speaks English or Spanish. Pickup is included from your accommodation in Salta, and the return drop-off is at your hotel. The tour runs about 14 hours total, so plan for a long day; the payoff is seeing four distinct villages and two of the region's most photographed geological formations without arranging transport or navigation yourself.
