The Experience

I didn’t expect the first thing I’d notice to be the cold air when we stepped out in Purmamarca. Our guide, Martín, pointed at each stripe and rattled off mineral names I instantly forgot. There was a woman selling tiny empanadas from a basket; I bought one just for the warmth in my hands. The bus windows kept fogging up as we climbed higher into Jujuy.

The drive through Quebrada de Humahuaca felt like flipping pages in a storybook — villages like Tilcara and Uquía just sort of appeared and disappeared again before I could get my bearings. In Uquía, we switched into this battered 4x4 that honestly looked ready for retirement, but somehow made it up the winding dirt road toward Serranías del Hornocal. That part was wild — dust swirling behind us, silence except for our driver humming something under his breath. When we finally reached the hill of 14 colors, everyone just stood there quietly for a minute. The wind tasted dry and thin; I tried counting the stripes but lost track around eight or nine.

Lunch was whatever you brought along — I’d packed a leftover sandwich that got squished in my bag (still tasted good though). On the way back we stopped briefly in Humahuaca; there was barely time to wander before heading out again, but I caught sight of an old man painting outside his shop. He waved at me with paint-stained fingers. The last light hit La Paleta del Pintor in Maimará just right — it almost glowed, or maybe I was just tired by then. Anyway, it sticks with me.
