The experience

I still remember how quiet it was at the Comarka Rafting dome before we got started. Just that soft hum of wind through the grass outside El Chaltén, and everyone sort of fidgeting with their neoprene suits. Then suddenly it all changed. We hit the first rapid, Portage, and it was like someone turned up the volume on Patagonia. Water slapped my face, someone behind me let out a shout (maybe me?), and we all scrambled to paddle in sync as Pablo yelled instructions over the roar. Ten kilometers of rapids isn’t something you can fake your way through. My arms burned but I barely noticed because I was laughing half the time. My left boot filled with icy water somewhere along the way. I kept meaning to fix it but never did.

When we finally stumbled out at the end, soaked but buzzing, there was hot mate waiting back at base. I sat there wrapped in a towel with steam rising off my hands, sipping sweet tea and listening to Pablo tell stories about growing up near Lago del Desierto. The whole thing felt less like a tour and more like being invited into someone’s backyard. If their backyard had glacial rivers and Fitz Roy looming over it. Even now when I hear rushing water anywhere else, part of me goes right back to that day.
