The Experience

We rolled out of El Calafate just after sunrise, the van windows fogged up from our coffee breath and that dry Patagonian cold. Our guide, Lucía, had this habit of pointing out things mid-sentence: like suddenly she’d spot a guanaco or say “look left!” at Lake Argentino’s turquoise stretch. I tried to catch everything but honestly kept getting distracted by how the light changes every five minutes out here. The drive to Perito Moreno Glacier isn’t long (about 1.5 hours), but it feels like you’re slowly leaving regular life behind.

The first time I saw the glacier was from Curva de Los Suspiros: Lucía called it “the curve of sighs,” which made us all laugh for some reason. But then you see it: this massive wall of blue-white ice, rumbling in the distance. It’s loud sometimes, like distant thunder or someone dropping furniture in another room. The air smells sharp, almost metallic, mixed with wet earth from last night’s rain. We started along the walkways (there are about 5 kilometers of them, zig-zagging for different views), and every angle felt new. Sometimes you catch a chunk falling off with a splash that echoes across the water. I didn’t expect to feel so small standing there.

Lucía told us stories about how the glacier moves and why it doesn’t shrink like others (something about its unique position, she explained it better than I can). She also pointed out tiny wildflowers growing in cracks between rocks. I almost missed them because my eyes kept drifting back to that endless ice. There were families with strollers and older folks taking their time on the ramps. Everyone seemed quietly awed, even if nobody said much for a while.

I still think about how cold my hands got holding onto the railing for too long, just watching and waiting for another piece to break off. On the way back, we all sat quieter than before: tired maybe, or just trying to hold onto that feeling a bit longer.
