The experience

You start with a transfer from your El Calafate accommodation to Los Glaciares National Park, traveling Route 11 through the Patagonian steppe. The drive itself frames what's coming: open landscape, wildlife sightings, and views across Lake Argentino build toward your first stop at Mirador de los Siglos, where the glacier appears in full. Your guide walks you through the park's history, ecology and geology as the route unfolds: context that makes the ice walls mean something beyond their size.

The walkway network stretches 4 kilometers across different levels and viewpoints, each one showing the glacier from a new angle. You have roughly two hours to move through them at your own pace, pausing where the view holds you. If you brought lunch, there's time to eat it here. If not, restaurants sit near the trails. The walk is steady but not strenuous. The park is built for all fitness levels, and you set the rhythm.

After the walkways, you board a boat for approximately one hour on Lake Argentino, approaching the glacier's wall directly. The ice rises 80 meters above the water, and if the timing aligns, you may see a detachment: a section of the glacier calving into the lake. The boat gives you a scale the walkways cannot: standing on the water in front of it is a different thing than viewing it from land. You return to El Calafate by the same route in the afternoon, arriving with time to rest before dinner.
