The experience

The day starts with a hotel pickup in El Calafate for the 80-kilometre drive to Los Glaciares National Park. Your guide talks through the Patagonian landscape as you travel, then you spend time on the park's network of footbridges: elevated walkways designed to show the glacier from different vantage points and heights. The blue tones of the ice and the waterfalls that pour into Lake Argentino are visible from each one.

The boat navigation is the centrepiece: a one-hour sail that takes you to within 150 metres of the glacier's south wall. The boat pauses in front of the ice so you can photograph and watch. During the crossing, icebergs commonly break off and slide into the water. You hear the sound of the glacier moving and see the scale of what is happening. The full day runs about eight hours door-to-door. Bring warm layers, a waterproof jacket, gloves and a hat. The Patagonian wind is constant.
