The experience

Your hotel pickup in central Bariloche happens early, and the coach heads toward Gutiérrez and Mascardi Lakes, following their shores on a dirt road that climbs toward Cerro Tronador. The mountain sits at the heart of Nahuel Huapi National Park and holds seven glaciers across its three peaks: Pico Chileno, Pico Argentino and Pico Internacional. Your guide leads a short walk into the woods to reach the glacier faces, where you'll hear why the mountain earned its name: the thunderous sound of calving ice chunks falling from the glacier walls.

After the walk, you ride the coach further through the Vuriloches Valley, passing native lenga and coihue forest and crossing the Manso River, a white-water rafting destination. The route stops in Pampa Linda, in Cerro Tronador's shadow, where you can buy lunch. The final leg takes you to the Ventisquero Negro glacier (a black snowdrift visible from the road) before the coach returns you to Bariloche.

The tour runs about nine and a half hours door to door. Your guide speaks English, Spanish or Portuguese depending on the option you choose at checkout. The coach is air-conditioned, and the walk to the glaciers is short enough for most fitness levels, though the high altitude and mountain terrain mean you'll be on uneven ground.
