The experience

The tour starts at the Obelisk of Buenos Aires, a national monument erected to mark the city's 400th anniversary, and moves through downtown's most significant sites. You'll see the Teatro Colón, ranked among the world's ten best opera houses, walk Florida Street where the national anthem was first sung, and stand in Plaza de Mayo: the foundational place where all of Argentina's major political events have unfolded. Your guide explains the history of the Casa Rosada, the presidential office known for its distinctive baby pink colour, and the Metropolitan Cathedral, where General José de San Martín, Argentina's liberator, is buried in a tomb with an unusual story.

San Telmo, the city's earliest neighbourhood, sits at the heart of the second half of the tour. The cobblestone streets and 19th-century architecture remain largely unchanged, and you'll visit Plaza Dorrego, the core of the antique trade and weekend fair. The guide takes you through Pasaje de la Defensa, a restored colonial promenade, and Parque Lezama, where historians believe Spanish conquistador Pedro de Mendoza first attempted to establish Buenos Aires in 1536. A coffee break is included during the walk.

La Boca closes the tour with its colourful houses and the pedestrian street Caminito, where tango artists perform and the neighbourhood's Italian heritage is visible in the architecture and taverns. The tour covers the full itinerary weather permitting, though the guide may adjust stops depending on city conditions, timing or other circumstances on the day. Public transportation options are available nearby if you need them.
