The experience
The trek starts with a hike from El Chaltén to Laguna de los Tres, where the trail steepens near the end but opens onto a lake ringed by glaciers and granite walls. From there you move to Poincenot Camp, where you sleep in a provided dome tent with your own sleeping bag and mat. The camp sits in the backcountry, which means you hike the second day with no weight on your back. Just water and layers.
Day two takes you from camp to Laguna Torre, a smaller lake directly below Cerro Torre where you can see the mountain's glacier and small icebergs floating on the water. You also pass Laguna Capri on the way, another viewpoint with its own angle on Fitz Roy. After Laguna Torre, you hike back down to El Chaltén. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are provided throughout, and the guide handles route decisions and pacing for the group.
The overnight camp is the core of this tour. It lets you reach two high lakes and return in two days without carrying a heavy pack, and it puts you in the landscape instead of rushing back to town each evening. Bring comfortable hiking pants, waterproof jacket and pants, hiking boots, a beanie and fleece, two pairs of socks, a small backpack, sunscreen and gloves. The operator runs this in all weather, so dress for wind and cold.
