The Experience

You're picked up from your hotel and driven to Nelson's Dockyard, the World Heritage Site where the English naval base operated in the late 1700s. The guide walks you through the restored harbor buildings and explains how the dockyard shaped Antigua's colonial history. From there, you head to Shirley Heights, the hilltop lookout position that once spotted approaching war vessels and gave the English Army a strategic advantage over the island. The vantage point shows you the sweep of English Harbor and the landscape the soldiers defended.

The drive inland takes you through the central plain and up into the volcanic hills of Saint Mary parish, where the road winds through mango, banana and coconut groves, past old sugar mills and village churches. This route—sometimes called the Fig Tree Drive—climbs to the farmlands around Fig Tree Hill before descending to the coastal village of Old Road. It's the kind of drive that shows you how the island's geography shifts from sea-level flatness to steep interior terrain.

The final stop is Devil's Bridge, a naturally formed limestone arch on Antigua's easternmost coast. It's a place to walk around, take pictures and sit for a picnic if you want one.
