The Experience
“Don’t worry, you’ll remember the first bar,” Ergi grinned as we gathered near Skanderbeg Square, just under that huge mosaic on the museum. I wasn’t sure if he meant because of the shots or the crowd — probably both. The square was buzzing even at 9:30 PM, kids still chasing pigeons while our little group tried to spot who else looked like they were here for a Tirana pub crawl. It felt good not to be the only one slightly awkward at first.
We headed into Blloku — which Ergi said used to be off-limits during communist times, but now it’s where everyone wants to be after dark. The air was thick with cigarette smoke and that sweet, sharp smell from raki behind every bar. Our guide kept us moving (and laughing), making sure we had our free welcome shot at each place. I tried something green and mysterious in the second bar; no idea what it was but it burned in a way that made me cough and then laugh with these two Spanish girls who were also on their first night out in Albania.
The photographer kept popping up when I least expected it — sometimes mid-toast, sometimes catching us trying (badly) to keep up with a drinking game that involved balancing coins on shot glasses. There was music everywhere, mostly Albanian pop but also some old American songs that made half the group sing along out of tune. At one point I lost track of time completely. I still think about how easy it was to talk to strangers here — maybe it was the shots or just something about Tirana at night.
