The experience
You start at a restaurant in Peshtan where you'll leave your car, then a shuttle takes you to Kelcyra Gorge to begin. The Vjosa is Europe's last free-flowing river, and this stretch cuts through canyons carved over millennia. Before pushing off, you'll suit up in a neoprene suit, thermal sweatshirt, life jacket and helmet, all provided, and your guide will walk you through the paddle ahead.
The route follows the river downstream for about two and a half hours, moving through the canyon with its walls rising around you. You'll pass waterfalls dropping into the water, navigate small rapids, and paddle past the Blue Eye, a natural spring phenomenon near Muzine Finiq where fresh water wells up from underground. The current does most of the work. The guide handles the route and watches for hazards, so you focus on the paddle and the landscape.
The trip ends at Peshtan, where the shuttle waits to take you back to your car. Bottled water is provided during the paddle. The whole outing fits inside a morning or afternoon, leaving the rest of your day free for the town of Gjirokaster or other sites nearby.
