The Experience

I’ll admit, I didn’t expect Gjirokastra to feel so alive—like the city was whispering stories through its old stone houses. Our guide, Ardit, met us right in Sarande (pickup was easy), and by the time we reached those winding lanes, I could already smell wood smoke mixed with coffee drifting out of someone’s kitchen window. The castle sits heavy above everything; climbing up felt like stepping into another century. Ardit pointed out where prisoners were kept—he said it almost casually, but you could see he cared about these details. I touched one of the cold stones and wondered how many hands had done the same.

The bazaar was a bit chaotic in that good way—kids darting between stalls, old men arguing over chess moves on a bench. I tried to say “thank you” in Albanian to a woman selling honey (pretty sure I butchered it because she laughed and handed me an extra spoonful). There’s this rhythm to life here that’s hard to explain unless you’re standing under those slate roofs with sunlight flickering through grapevines overhead. We had time to wander without feeling rushed; honestly, I wish I’d bought more than just one jar of jam.

After lunch (simple but somehow perfect), we drove out toward the Blue Eye. The air changed—cooler, sharper—and suddenly there it was: water so clear it looked fake. Ardit told us nobody really knows how deep it goes. Standing at the edge, toes curling in damp grass, I felt small in a good way.
