The Experience

You step out of the car into the Durrës countryside and the hills roll down toward the sea. The vineyards are there — rows of vines that have been replanted and tended since Albania opened back up in the 1990s, after decades when wine production nearly stopped. Your guide is waiting, and the first thing you do is taste raki, the homemade brandy that tastes like nothing you've had before, sharp and clear and made locally. Then you walk into the vineyard itself, and the guide starts talking about the grapes — Autochthonous varieties that grow here because the soil and the slope and the sea wind make them grow here, not somewhere else.

The history comes up naturally as you move between the rows. The Romans knew about these grapes — the Biturica vine that started the whole Cabernet family came from this region, back when it was Illyria. Then came the Ottomans, and wine production dropped to almost nothing because of religious law. Then came 1944 to 1992, when Albania was closed off and the vineyards that did exist were state-run, producing wine for export, not for tasting. Your guide knows this story because it's his region, and he tells it without drama, just as fact. By 1990, when things started to change, Albania had around 18,000 to 20,000 hectares of vineyard. Now you're standing in some of what came back.

After the vineyard walk, you move to the wine cellar — a real one, not a tourist version — and a sommelier takes over. The cellar is cool and quiet, and the sommelier walks you through the production process from harvest to bottle, then pours local wines one by one. You taste them slowly, and the food comes out: cheeses, cured meats, olives, bread, all local. There's also an olive oil tasting, which sounds small until you realize how much better olive oil tastes when someone who knows it is pouring it. The whole thing takes a few hours, and you're not rushed through it.

Transport is included — air-conditioned, comfortable — so you don't have to drive yourself or figure out how to get back to Tirana. The guide speaks English, and the sommelier does too. By the end of the afternoon, you've tasted wines that most people outside Albania never get to try, eaten food that matches them, and learned why this particular stretch of countryside matters to the history of wine itself.
