The experience
The tour starts with pickup from your hotel in Saranda and heads toward the ancient site, passing Butrinti Lake and the Ksamili Islands where the panorama of water, islands and coastline frames the approach. Once at Butrint, the route moves through layers of history: you'll walk past the remains of a Roman theatre, then a temple, an ancient fitness center with public baths, and an aqueduct that carried water across the site. The Byzantine church stands with a baptistery that has survived largely intact: one of the few of its kind still preserved.
The tour ends at a hilltop Venetian castle, which offers views back over the archaeological zone. The site itself is quiet and scattered with eucalyptus trees, so the atmosphere is as much about the setting as the stones. An air-conditioned vehicle carries the group, and WiFi is available on board. A live guide in your chosen language walks you through each stop and explains what you're standing in front of, so the 2,500-year span of occupation becomes legible rather than overwhelming.

Butrint spans 2,500 years of occupation, with remains from the Roman period (theatre, temple, baths, aqueduct), the Byzantine era (church and baptistery), and the Venetian period (hilltop castle).
