Step-by-step itinerary

Explore Matobo Village and Culture

  • Visit Silunguzi Matopos village
  • Hear Headman's historical stories
  • Learn local cooking and cattle-raising
  • Help villagers with daily tasks
  • Explore ancient San Bushmen cave paintings

The experience

If you're staying in the area without a car or want to skip arranging transport yourself, this tour handles the logistics: pickup comes to your hotel, and the guide (who speaks English), leads the whole day. The route takes you into Silunguzi, where the Headman shares the village's story of resisting European settlers and protecting their land and minerals. You're not watching from a distance. You join villagers in their daily work: helping with meal preparation, learning how they source and cook traditional food, and seeing how cattle sustain the community.

The second half moves to one of the region's oldest caves, where San Bushmen paintings cover the rock walls, some thousands of years old. The paintings are the draw here: a direct line to the people who lived in these hills long before. Wear closed-toe shoes and bring sunscreen. The cave walk and village paths are uneven, and the sun exposure is real.

Lunch and bottled water are included, along with soft drinks. The full day runs six hours. Bring sunglasses, a hat and bug spray. Infants can sit on an adult's lap, and specialized infant seats are available if you need one. The tour suits all fitness levels, though it's not recommended for pregnant travelers.
