The experience

Khami Ruins sits at a crossroads in Zimbabwe's history: the point where the Great Zimbabwe period gave way to the later Zimbabwe era. What makes it archaeologically significant is what makes it worth the trip: unlike many sites in the region, it was never ransacked by treasure hunters, so the layers of settlement remain intact and readable. You walk through a complex of dry-stone platforms and structures that once housed the royal court of the Torwa Dynasty in the 16th century, seeing the chief's residence on the Hill Ruin, the Vlei and Monolith platforms, and the narrow galleries that connected them.

The ruins are built from granite and show a high standard of workmanship: chevron and chequered patterns decorate the walls, and the passageways are narrow enough that you move through them slowly, taking in the scale and precision of construction. The surrounding area held daga huts where the population lived, enclosed by a series of granite walls. A private guide in English walks you through the site, pointing out the different platforms and explaining how the layout reveals the hierarchy and daily life of the settlement. You travel in an air-conditioned vehicle, and the tour includes bottled water and snacks.

The site is suitable for most fitness levels, though the terrain is uneven and involves walking across platforms and through passages. The tour runs between two and four hours depending on how much time you spend at each section. Pickup is included in the price. Children from age 6 can join.
