The experience
The tour starts with a circular drive through Matopos National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site built around distinctive granite rock formations. The drive is where you see the wildlife the park holds (antelope, zebras, wildebeests), though leopard sightings are rare. Your guide drives an air-conditioned vehicle and stops at the sites that frame the park's layered history: the San rock paintings, the graves of Cecil Rhodes and the early English settlers, and the granite landscape itself.
The largest cave in the park is the centerpiece. It once sheltered around 150 San people, and the rock paintings they left behind still cover the walls: the reason archaeologists believe the cave was their shelter. A small museum at the site documents their lives. Leopards are said to inhabit the area around the cave, though sightings are uncommon. From there, the tour moves to Malindidzimu, known as World's View because of the uninterrupted scenery from the hilltop where Cecil Rhodes, Jameson and Coghlan are buried. Sunset views from this point are noted as spectacular.
The tour includes private transportation, hotel pickup and drop-off, bottled water, snacks and a driver-guide who speaks English. Park entry fees to the cave and Rhodes's grave are not included in the tour price and are paid separately. The full four-hour experience fits into a morning or afternoon slot.
