Summary

Castles, poets, sea air and stories on a West Wales day trip

You’ll walk ancient halls at Pembroke Castle, share lunch overlooking Tenby’s bright harbor, and end your day tracing Dylan Thomas’s footsteps in Laugharne — all with a local guide who brings every story alive. Expect small surprises: new words in Welsh, laughter over soup, maybe even a poem read aloud as the tide slips away.

experience

What’s the experience like?

We rolled into Pembroke just as the morning clouds started to thin out — Gareth was already telling us how the castle walls have seen more drama than most soap operas. There’s something about walking through those heavy gates with him that made the old stone feel less like a museum and more like someone’s stubborn grandparent. I tried to picture medieval life while Gareth pointed out arrow slits and muttered some Welsh under his breath (I think he was testing if we’d notice). The castle’s cold air had this odd smell — damp lichen and something metallic — that stuck to my jacket for hours.

Tenby came next, all pastel houses and gulls fighting over chips by the harbor. Lunch wasn’t fancy but tasted perfect after all those castle stairs — cawl soup, thick bread, and Gareth laughing at my attempt to say “diolch” (I’m still not sure I got it right). We wandered along the sand for a bit; my shoes are probably still full of it. There were kids chasing each other near the tide line, their parents calling out in Welsh. I liked that part — felt like we’d stumbled into someone else’s summer holiday.

The last stop was Laugharne. It’s quieter there, almost sleepy except for the pub where Dylan Thomas used to drink (and apparently argue with everyone). We sat outside with pints, looking at the estuary light shifting over mudflats and boats. Gareth read us a few lines from Under Milk Wood — not dramatic or anything, just soft enough that I almost missed it. That view sticks with me more than any postcard ever could.
