The Experience

The first thing that hit me in Saigon was the sound—scooters everywhere, horns like a language of their own. Our guide, Minh, waved us into a minivan just as the city started to wake up. He had this calm way of explaining things, like he’d lived every story himself. The drive out to the Cu Chi Tunnels took about an hour and a half; I watched the city melt into green fields and small houses. We stopped at this lacquerware workshop—honestly, I didn’t expect to care but ended up running my fingers over these glossy panels while one woman laughed at my attempt to say “xin chào.”

At Cu Chi, there’s this old black-and-white video they show you first—propaganda-ish but strangely moving. I could smell earth and something almost metallic as we ducked into the tunnels (I’m not tall but still managed to bump my head). Minh pointed out where kitchens used to be hidden underground; he told us how people lived for months down there. My shirt got streaked with red dust crawling through one of the narrowest bits—I don’t think I’ve ever felt so aware of my own heartbeat. At some point we tried boiled tapioca with tea, sitting on tiny stools under trees. It tasted plain but good after all that crouching around.

Lunch was in a little restaurant back in Saigon—a set menu with five courses I couldn’t pronounce (Minh wrote them down for me). The soup had this sharp scent of lemongrass that stuck to my hands for hours. Afterward we walked through Reunification Palace—huge gates, old rotary phones on desks—and then the War Remnants Museum. That place is heavy. Photos you can’t really look away from. There was a silence in our group when we left; even Minh seemed quieter.

Last stop was Ben Thanh Market—so many colors it made me dizzy for a second. A woman selling fruit winked at me when I hesitated over dragonfruit (I bought it anyway). By then my brain was full and my feet were tired but I felt like I’d seen pieces of Vietnam’s story up close—not just facts, but feelings too. Still thinking about that tunnel air on my skin.
