The day starts with pickup from your hotel in District 1, 3, 4 or nearby areas, then moves through Ho Chi Minh City's colonial quarter. You'll see the Reunification Palace, the War Remnants Museum, Notre Dame Cathedral, the Central Post Office and the Jade Emperor Pagoda: each one a different layer of the city's history, from French architecture to Vietnam's more recent past. A guide walks you through what you're standing in front of, so the landmarks hold together as a story rather than a list of stops.
Lunch happens midday at a restaurant with a Vietnamese set menu. Vegan options are available. You'll also get tapioca, wheat cake, Vietnamese hot tea and mineral water throughout the day to keep you moving. The second half is the Cu Chi Tunnels, about an hour outside the city. Before you go underground, a short video shows how the tunnels were built and used. Then you spend time in the maze itself: walking through passages, seeing trap doors, storage areas, field hospitals, kitchens and command centers. You actually crawl through one of the tunnels, not just look at an entrance.
You can book this as a shared group tour or a private tour. The group option picks up from central districts. The private option extends to more neighborhoods including Phu Nhuan, Tan Binh and Binh Thanh. Either way, the minivan is air-conditioned and the return to your hotel is included.
