The Experience
Our driver pulled up right outside our hotel in Hanoi—no need to drag bags through busy streets or wait for a taxi that might never show. The air was already warming up, and you could hear the city waking up: scooters buzzing, someone frying something garlicky nearby. We tossed our bags in the trunk (plenty of space, even with my friend’s giant suitcase) and settled into the back seat. The car smelled faintly of lemon air freshener—not too strong—and there were cold bottles of water waiting for us.
The drive itself felt easy. We left when we wanted—no set schedule—so there was no rush or stress about missing a train. Our driver, Mr. Tuan, chatted a bit but mostly let us relax. He pointed out the Red River as we crossed it and offered to stop at a roadside café if we needed coffee or a bathroom break. At one point, we passed a small village where women were selling bundles of green rice by the highway; you wouldn’t spot that from a bus window. The whole trip took just over two hours on the highway—quicker than I expected—and we rolled right up to our guesthouse in Ninh Binh without having to change vehicles or haul luggage around.
