Summary

Hoa Lu temples Bai Dinh pagoda Trang An boat ride Mua Cave hike

You’ll walk through ancient royal gates at Hoa Lu, wander Bai Dinh Pagoda’s endless halls, share a quiet boat ride through Trang An’s caves, and climb up Mua Cave for wild sunset views over Tam Coc—all with a local guide and lunch included. Expect laughter, small surprises (maybe even goat meat), and moments that stick with you long after you’re back.

I didn’t expect to feel so small standing in front of those old stone gates at Hoa Lu. Our guide, Minh, told us stories about the kings who ruled here—he kept switching between Vietnamese and English and I caught maybe half of it, but the way he pointed at carvings and laughed when we mispronounced names made me feel like I was getting a real slice of history. The air smelled faintly of incense and wet grass. There were only a few other travelers around, which surprised me for such an important place.

Bai Dinh Pagoda was next. It’s huge—like, you think you’ve seen big temples before but this one just keeps going. We took an electric car up the hill (which honestly saved my legs), passing rows of stone arhats with different faces—some smiling, some serious. Minh showed us the massive bronze bells and said people come from all over Vietnam to pray here during festivals. He pressed my hand to one of the cool stone statues for luck. I don’t know if it worked but I liked the gesture.

Lunch was simple—rice, goat meat (which I’d never tried), crispy spring rolls. The restaurant was noisy with locals chatting over tea and kids running around outside. Then we drove to Trang An for the boat ride. Floating through those limestone caves felt unreal—the water was glassy green and our rower, a woman named Lan, hummed softly as she steered us under low rock ceilings. At one point she handed me a lotus seed snack; I’m not sure I liked it but it tasted earthy and fresh.

The last stop was Mua Cave. Honestly, climbing those 500 steps after a full day felt rough—I stopped more than once pretending to take photos but really just catching my breath. But when we reached the top… well, Minh grinned at me like he knew what was coming. You can see all of Tam Coc below: rice fields like patchwork in the late sun, limestone peaks poking up everywhere. It’s not something I’ll forget soon.
