The experience
The drive from Chan May to My Son takes roughly an hour and a half. Once there, you spend about ninety minutes with your guide walking through the valley surrounded by jungle and mountains, examining how the Cham people built temples without mortar across centuries of rebuilding. Your guide explains the history of each temple and helps you frame photographs. This is not a rushed walk-through but time to actually look.
After My Son, the route heads to Hoi An, an hour's drive away. This former trading port sits on the Thu Bon River and has stayed largely unchanged for centuries: merchants from China, Japan, Holland and Portugal once came here to trade wood, gold and silk. You arrive for a local lunch, then walk the town with your guide. The Japanese Bridge, a symbol of Hoi An, gets explained in detail. You also visit a traditional house, a Chinese Assembly Hall and the cultural and historical museum, with free time afterward to wander, shop for paintings or browse the market.
On the return to Chan May, you stop at My Khe Beach for a swim in the South China Sea and a beer before the drive back to the port. The operator times the return so you arrive at least an hour before your ship departs. Water, tissue and an air-conditioned vehicle with an experienced driver are provided throughout.
