The experience
A private car picks you up at your hotel in Ha Long Bay Area or at Halong International Cruise Port and drives you to Tuan Chau Harbour, where your canoe is waiting. From there, you paddle out into Lan Ha Bay to discover the limestone landscape at your own pace. The route passes through thousands of limestone islands, and the first major stop is Dark Cave and Bright Cave: two of the bay's most distinctive formations. You'll have time to paddle through and photograph the rock formations, then continue exploring the islets nearby.
After the caves, you head to Ba Trai Dao Beach for swimming and time in the water. The bay's clarity makes this the main draw for most paddlers, and depending on the tide, you may reach smaller, more secluded beaches. Bring swimwear, sunscreen and sunglasses. The operator notes that tide conditions sometimes limit which beaches are accessible. Once you've had enough time in the water, you paddle back to Tuan Chau Harbour and the car returns you to your starting point.

Top questions
What's the difference between paddling a canoe and taking a bamboo boat in Lan Ha Bay?
A canoe is something you paddle yourself, using your own effort to steer and move through the water. A bamboo boat is a traditional vessel where someone else rows or poles it while you sit as a passenger. This trip gives you the canoe option, so you're in control of the paddle.
Can I swim at Ba Trai Dao Beach, or is it just for looking at?
Ba Trai Dao Beach is a swimming stop. You get in the water, and the operator recommends bringing swimwear and sunscreen. Tide conditions sometimes affect which beaches are accessible, so the exact location can vary depending on the day.
Is this trip suitable if I've never kayaked before?
The operator lists the activity as suitable for all physical fitness levels, so beginners are welcome. No prior kayaking experience is mentioned as a requirement.
