The experience
The evening starts at the Cat Ba Ventures office on Mot Thang Tu Street, then a short bus ride takes you to Beo Pier. You board a traditional local boat and cruise into Lan Ha Bay, passing floating fishing houses and limestone formations as the light begins to fade. At a secluded beach (That Nghieng or another spot depending on tide). You get into a kayak and paddle the calm waters as the sun sets over the cliffs.
Once darkness falls, the real event begins: you paddle back out to watch the water light up around your kayak. Bioluminescent plankton glow when disturbed, so each stroke of your paddle leaves a trail of blue-green light in the water. The effect is strongest in the deepest darkness, and the guide times the paddle to catch the peak. After roughly 4.5 hours total, you return to Cat Ba town, but not before heading to a floating restaurant for a Vietnamese dinner while the bay settles into night.
The small group size (kept intentionally limited) means your guide can adjust the route and timing based on what the tide and weather allow that evening. Some nights the plankton glow is vivid. Others it is subtle. The swim at sunset and the dinner are fixed parts of the experience, but where you kayak and how long you stay out depends on conditions. This flexibility is why the same tour rarely plays out the same way twice.
Is this one for you?Book this if you want to paddle and see the plankton glow yourself rather than watch from a boat: the kayak puts you at water level where the light is brightest. The small group size means your guide can linger where the plankton are most active and adjust the route to match the tide, so you're not rushing through the experience.

What is bioluminescent plankton and when does it glow brightest?
Bioluminescent plankton are tiny organisms that emit light when the water around them is disturbed: by your paddle, your hand, or the boat's movement. The glow is strongest in complete darkness and on nights when the plankton concentration is high, which varies by season and recent weather. Your guide will know the conditions for the evening and position the kayak time accordingly.
Can I swim in Lan Ha Bay during this kayaking trip?
Yes. You swim at a secluded beach (typically That Nghieng or a nearby spot) during the sunset portion of the evening, before the night kayaking begins. The water is calm and shallow near the beach, and the guide supervises the swim.
What kind of boat and kayak will I use?
You travel to the bay on a traditional local boat, the kind used by fishing families in the area. For the kayaking itself, you paddle a single or double kayak depending on group size and your preference. The guide will confirm the setup when you meet.
How much paddling experience do I need?
None. The waters in Lan Ha Bay are calm and shallow, and the pace is leisurely. The guide leads the group and adjusts speed to match the group's comfort. Children from age 4 are welcome, and the activity suits all fitness levels.
What happens if the weather is bad on the evening I book?
The itinerary is flexible and can shift based on tide and weather. If conditions are unsafe for kayaking, the guide will adjust the route or timing to keep you safe while still reaching the highlights: the sunset swim and the floating dinner are priorities. Severe weather may require rescheduling. Your operator will advise you in advance.
