The experience
The day starts with a pickup in Hue and a drive to Thanh Toan Bridge, a 16th-century stone structure built by a villager's donation and set in open countryside. From there, the route heads toward the coast, passing through villages and farmland before reaching Lap An Lagoon, a brackish water body on Lang Co Bay where the temperature ranges from 18 to 31 degrees Celsius depending on the season. The lagoon sits at the boundary between Vietnam's two climate zones, making early morning or evening the ideal time to stop and take in the view.
The Hai Van Pass itself is the centerpiece of the journey: a winding mountain road that Jeremy Clarkson of Top Gear called "a deserted ribbon of perfection" and one of the best coastal roads in the world. It serves as both a geographic and climatic divide, and the drive takes roughly twenty minutes to cross. On the far side, the route descends toward Marble Mountains, a group of five limestone peaks seven kilometers from Da Nang. The peaks are named after the five elements and hold caves, tunnels, pagodas, and shrines built over centuries by Buddhist monks and Vietnamese emperors. Vines hang from the stone, frangipani trees drop blossoms on the paths, and the pagoda roofs catch the light.
After Marble Mountains, you continue by private car with your driver to Hoi An. The full journey takes six to eight hours depending on how long you spend at each stop. You travel with an English-speaking driver, and all entrance tickets to the sites are included. Bring wet tissues for the road, and mineral water is provided.
