The Experience

The morning started with a bit of confusion — our bus was late by maybe 20 minutes, but honestly, it gave me time to watch the street wake up in Hue. There was this woman selling tiny bananas right outside the hotel, and I almost bought some but got distracted when our guide, Minh, showed up waving his phone around looking for us. He apologized for the delay (apparently someone else forgot their passport), and we all shuffled onto the bus together. It felt like a little group adventure already.

First stop was Thanh Toan Bridge. Minh explained how it’s one of Vietnam’s oldest wooden bridges — I tried to repeat its name in Vietnamese and he just grinned. The bridge itself is narrow and covered in these old tiles that creak a bit under your feet. There were kids fishing nearby and an old lady selling sticky rice wrapped in banana leaves (the smell was sweet and earthy). I didn’t expect to feel so calm there — it’s quiet except for the occasional scooter zipping past.

We drove along Lap An Lagoon next. The water looked like glass, reflecting mountains that seemed too big for the sky. Someone on the bus tried to take a panorama but mostly got their own reflection in the window — we laughed about it for a while. At Hai Van Pass, we stopped for a snack (they handed out small bread rolls). The wind up there is sharp and salty, and you can see all the way down to Da Nang if you squint through the mist. My hands got cold holding my water bottle; I kind of liked it.

The last real stop before Hoi An was Marble Mountains. Minh led us through one of the caves — it smelled damp and cool inside, like stone after rain. There were monks chanting somewhere deeper in; their voices echoed around us. I kept thinking about how many people must’ve passed through here over centuries. We reached Hoi An just as the sun started dipping low — not every hotel can be dropped at directly because of those tiny streets (Minh warned us), but walking through lantern-lit alleys with my backpack didn’t bother me at all. I still think about that first glimpse of yellow walls and paper lanterns swaying overhead.
