The Experience
I didn’t really expect the drive from Hue to Hoi An to be anything special — honestly, I just wanted to get from one city to the next without too much hassle. But right after we left Hue, our driver (Mr. Thanh) started chatting about his favorite coffee stalls along the way and how the weather changes as you climb up Hai Van Pass. The windows fogged a little as we got higher; you could smell the wet grass and hear trucks grinding gears on the curves. He stopped at a lookout where the wind just cut through everything — my hair was a mess in every photo but I didn’t care. That view over the coast is still stuck in my head.
The Golden Bridge was next, up in Ba Na Hills. I’d seen photos of those giant stone hands holding up the walkway but seeing it float above the clouds felt almost unreal — there’s this weird silence up there when you step away from the crowds, broken only by kids laughing or someone’s phone alarm going off (ours did). Mr. Thanh waited patiently while we wandered around; he even taught me how to say “Cầu Vàng” properly (I think I butchered it — he laughed but said it was close enough). Lunch was wherever we wanted; we grabbed noodles at a tiny roadside spot that smelled like grilled pork and lemongrass.
We finished at Marble Mountains near Da Nang. The steps were steeper than I thought (my legs are not forgiving), but inside those caves it was cool and echoey, with incense smoke curling around old statues. There were monks sweeping leaves outside one of the pagodas — they nodded as we passed, which felt oddly grounding after all that climbing. We reached Hoi An just before sunset, tired but kind of wired from everything we'd seen along this day trip from Hue to Hoi An.
