The Experience

Hands covered in a bit of marble dust — that’s how I realized we’d actually climbed up into the heart of Marble Mountains. Our guide, Minh, handed me a cold bottle of water and pointed out carvings inside the cave walls. The air was thick and a little earthy, incense drifting from somewhere deeper. I tried to pronounce “Ngu Hanh Son” like he did (Li laughed at my accent), and we wandered through Tam Thai Pagoda as bells chimed from somewhere above. It felt both sacred and slightly mysterious — not what I expected right outside Da Nang.

The drive to Hoi An was quiet, just the hum of the road and flashes of green rice fields. When we got there, the whole ancient town looked like someone had painted it with lantern light. Dinner was a blur of new flavors — I still think about that chewy Cao Lau noodles dish, honestly no idea what makes it taste smoky like that. Our group sat by the river, trying Banh Bao and Hoanh Thanh while scooters zipped past. Someone’s grandma waved at us from her doorway (she had a tiny dog in her arms), which made me smile for no reason.

Walking along the Hoai River after dinner, it was mostly locals out — couples taking selfies near the Japanese Bridge, kids chasing each other between pools of colored light. We ended up back at our hotel around 9pm, tired but kind of wired from all those colors and sounds.
