The Experience

I didn’t expect to feel so small weaving through the Old Quarter in Hanoi. The streets are narrow—sometimes you have to step sideways when a scooter squeezes past—and everything smells like grilled pork, exhaust, and something sweet I couldn’t place. Our guide, Minh, waved us over to Dong Xuan Market first. He said it’s where his grandmother still haggles for fish. I tried not to stare but there was so much going on: women balancing baskets on their shoulders, teenagers shouting prices I couldn’t catch. Minh pointed out a bullet mark on the wall from the 1946 fighting—just casually, like he was showing us where to buy noodles.

We ducked into Ma May Heritage House next. It’s dim inside, cool in that way old stone houses are. No fridge humming, no lights except sunlight slipping through wooden shutters. Minh explained how families lived here before electricity—he laughed about using rainwater instead of shampoo. I touched the carved banister; it felt worn smooth by years of hands. Then we headed for Long Bien Bridge. The metal rattled under our feet as trains passed below (I jumped a little).
