The Experience

I didn’t expect the first thing I’d notice in Hanoi’s Old Quarter to be the sound—the tangled, relentless symphony of scooter horns and voices, all bouncing off those narrow yellow walls. Our guide, Minh, met us right at the hotel lobby (he waved with both hands, which made me smile), then led us straight into the maze. Within minutes, we were ducking past a woman fanning charcoal over a tiny grill and the smell—sweet smoke mixed with something herbal—caught in my throat. I kept thinking: this is nothing like the vegetarian food I grew up with.

The best part? Minh seemed to know everyone. He’d nod or joke in Vietnamese with stall owners before handing us little bowls—one was a slippery noodle soup that tasted like lemongrass and pepper (I still think about that broth). At another stop, he insisted we try bánh mì chay. The bread was warm and flaky; I tried to say “thank you” in Vietnamese and totally butchered it. The vendor just laughed and handed me extra pickled carrots. It felt easy being here—no pressure to be an expert, just curiosity and a full stomach.

After weaving through alleys packed with silver shops and paper lanterns (Minh pointed out which guild each street belonged to—apparently there used to be only 36), we hopped onto cyclos for a slow ride around Hoan Kiem Lake. The air cooled down a bit as dusk crept in. From the seat, Hanoi looked different—slower somehow, but still buzzing underneath. We finished with egg coffee at a tiny café; it was creamy and sweet, almost dessert-like. I didn’t want to leave that spot just yet.

What’s included

Your evening includes hotel pickup by your English-speaking local guide, tastings of vegetarian phở noodle soup and bánh mì sandwiches from family-run stalls in Hanoi’s Old Quarter, a 30-minute cyclo ride past Hoan Kiem Lake, plenty of street food samples along the way, plus a traditional egg coffee before you’re free to explore more or get help returning to your hotel.
