The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the hush inside the Temple of Literature—just this soft crunch of gravel underfoot and the faint smell of incense drifting from somewhere behind the ancient red pillars. Our guide, Linh, told us about Confucius and mandarins and old dynasties but honestly, I kept getting distracted by the way sunlight hit those carved dragons on the roof. It felt like stepping sideways in time. There were school kids giggling in uniforms near the pond, practicing their English greetings on us (“Hello! Hoa Lo Prison hit different. The walls are thick and cold even on a humid morning.
