The Experience
The first thing I remember is the way the light bounced off West Lake as we pulled up to Tran Quoc Pagoda. Our guide, Minh, had this easy smile and pointed out how monks still sweep the stone paths every morning — you could actually smell incense drifting from somewhere inside. I tried to take a photo but got distracted by an old man feeding birds near the water. It was quieter than I expected for Hanoi. Maybe that’s why it stuck with me.
We swung past the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum next — not inside, just around Ba Dinh Square. Minh told us about Uncle Ho’s daily walks here (he called him “Uncle” like everyone does). The square felt huge, but there were kids flying kites and a couple of women selling lotus flowers by the curb. I fumbled my Vietnamese trying to say thank you — Minh laughed and helped me out. He also suggested we peek at One Pillar Pagoda since we had time, which honestly looked like something out of a storybook perched on its single column.
But Hanoi Train Street was what I’d been waiting for. We squeezed into this tiny café right on the edge of the tracks — so close you could almost reach out and touch them (don’t). The owner handed us iced coffee while her daughter drew pictures in chalk on the floor. When the train finally came through, everyone went quiet for a second — then it was this rush of metal and wind so close you feel it in your chest. Afterward, people just went back to chatting like nothing happened. It was oddly comforting.
The Temple of Literature felt like stepping into another century; stone turtles lined up in neat rows under banyan trees, students taking graduation photos everywhere. Minh explained how it was Vietnam’s first university, but honestly I was just happy sitting on a bench listening to birds for a minute. We wandered through the Old Quarter after that — scooters everywhere, smells of grilling pork and fresh herbs mixing with exhaust (not always pleasant but very Hanoi). French Quarter flashed by in pastel buildings and flower stalls before we ended up back at our hotel. Still thinking about that train street moment though — weird how some things just stay with you.
