The Experience

I wasn’t sure what to expect from a Hanoi city tour — I’d seen photos, but actually standing by West Lake with Tran Quoc Pagoda rising up, red and quiet against the water, felt different. Our guide (Minh) told us stories about monks and emperors while a breeze carried incense and something fried from a food stall nearby. There was this moment at the Literature Temple where the air went still for a second, just birds and the smell of wet stone after last night’s rain. I tried to read one of the old Confucian tablets but gave up — Minh just grinned and said even locals struggle with that script.

Lunch was quick but good — rice, some kind of pork stew, lots of herbs. Then we wandered Hoan Kiem Lake. I’d seen it on postcards but didn’t realize how many people come here just to sit or nap on benches. At Ngoc Son Temple, an old man tried to teach me how to pronounce “Turtle Tower” in Vietnamese. He laughed so hard when I got it wrong that I started laughing too. It was humid but not unbearable; you get used to it after an hour or two.

The next morning we left early for Halong Bay — bus ride was long (3+ hours) but there were rice fields everywhere and people working them even before breakfast time. We stopped for coffee halfway; strong enough to make your hands shake a little. Boarding the boat felt like stepping into another world: limestone cliffs everywhere, water greenish-grey under cloudy light. Lunch on board tasted better than expected — maybe it’s just being surrounded by all that space and silence? We cruised past fishing villages where kids waved at us from tiny boats. The cave (Thien Cung) was cool and echoey inside; stalactites like melted candles overhead.

I still think about that view leaving Halong Bay — sky heavy with clouds, everything quiet except for gulls trailing behind us. It’s not perfect travel (there are crowds sometimes), but there’s something honest about seeing Vietnam this way: temples in the city one day, wild rocks and open water the next.
