Abseiling and exploring Cat Ba Island

  • Hike through Cat Ba National Park
  • Enjoy view from Golden Monkey Mountain
  • Abseil, kayak, and explore Hang Vem Lagoon

The experience

You start in Cat Ba National Park, walking through lush forest to reach the first abseiling point. The descent itself is the core of the day: you're lowered down limestone cliffs with the bay spreading below you. Emerald water, karst peaks, the whole landscape tilting into view as you drop. The equipment follows UIAA international climbing standards, so the harness and ropes are the same gear used on alpine routes worldwide.

From the cliff base, you paddle a kayak into hidden coves carved into the limestone. The water is clear enough to see the bottom, and the rock walls rise straight up on either side: some passages narrow enough that you duck under overhangs. You'll paddle into caves where stalactites hang from the ceiling, then back out into open water where seabirds wheel overhead. This is Lan Ha Bay's quieter side, the spots tour boats don't reach.

The day ends at Hang Vem Lagoon, a freshwater pool trapped inside a ring of cliffs on Cat Ba Island. You swim here after the climbing and paddling, the water cool and still. Meals and soft drinks are included throughout: enough fuel to sustain the physical work without breaking the rhythm of the day. Public transportation runs near the meeting point, so you don't need a private transfer to get there.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English and Vietnamese.

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Youth (12 to 17 years). Children under 12 can't be included in the booking.

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What's the physical demand like for someone who's never abseiled before?

You need at least a moderate level of fitness to manage the full day of trekking, climbing and paddling. Abseiling itself is not about strength (the rope and harness hold your weight), but you do need to be comfortable on a cliff face and able to walk steep forest trails. The guide controls your descent speed, so the technical skill is learned as you go.

How long is the actual abseiling, and how high are the cliffs?

The itinerary includes multiple abseiling points throughout the day, with descents into Hang Vem Lagoon and other limestone formations. The exact height varies by location, but the cliffs are tall enough to make the descent a real experience, not a short drop. The full activity runs 8 hours from start to finish.

Can I bring my 10-year-old, or is there a minimum age?

Children are welcome from age 12 and up. Younger children cannot join this tour because of the physical demands and the safety requirements for abseiling equipment.

What happens if I'm afraid of heights or tight spaces?

Severe acrophobia or claustrophobia (especially with symptoms like fainting or seizures) makes this tour unsafe. The caves are real enclosed spaces and the cliffs are genuinely high. If you have significant anxiety about either, this activity is not the right fit.

Is the lagoon water fresh or salt, and can I swim in it?

Hang Vem Lagoon is freshwater, trapped inside the limestone ring on Cat Ba Island. You do swim in it at the end of the day as part of the tour. It's a core part of the experience after the climbing and paddling.
