The experience
What makes canyoning different from a hike is the ropes: you'll use them to descend sections where the canyon's topography demands it, while other stretches you'll wade or swim through. The day starts with a drive south of Da Lat along scenic roads to the trailhead, where you'll see a waterfall right at the canyon's edge. At a practice slope, your guide walks you through knot tying, harness fitting, hardware and proper rappelling technique: the fundamentals that let you move safely through the water and rock. Once the guide is satisfied you've got it, you head to your first rappel: a 15-meter drop into the river below.
From there the canyon opens up. You'll traverse a Tyrolean line that swings you out and over a waterfall and the river itself, then continue downstream through sections where you swim, hike and slide. The whole experience is built around water and gravity. You're moving through the landscape rather than walking past it. A picnic lunch breaks up the afternoon, and purified water keeps you hydrated throughout.
The tour runs five hours total and requires at least a moderate level of fitness. You're moving continuously through water and over uneven terrain. Guides speak English and Vietnamese. Bring comfortable clothes and water shoes or sport sandals. The wet suit and all canyoning gear are provided. Minimum group size is two people, and children are welcome from age 13.
