The experience
The day starts with pickup from Can Tho city center and a stop at Binh Thuy ancient house, a French-style home built in 1870 on the grounds of a temple. You spend about 45 minutes exploring the house and learning its history before heading to a ferry port for a 15-minute crossing to Son island on the Mekong River.
Once on the island, you visit a snakehead fish farmer's house set in a garden of seasonal fruits. You taste fresh local fruit and watch the fish respond to feeding for about 30 minutes. Then you move to another local home where the real work begins: a short cooking class where you learn to prepare dishes, followed by a traditional Vietnamese lunch made partly from what you cooked. The homeowner also serves homemade cakes. You spend roughly 2.5 hours here, with time to explore the village and rest in the fresh air afterward.
Before returning to Can Tho, you visit the floating fish-raft villages to see how catfish and other fish are raised on the water. The boat brings you back to the city center where the tour ends.
