The experience
Samarkand's winemaking goes back to the early 19th century, when a Russian pioneer first started production in the region. Khovrenko Winery carries that history forward, and the tasting tour lets you taste what comes out of it: Uzbek wines and cognacs made from natural products, poured by someone who knows the story. You'll taste with dessert, which is how the winery pairs them.
The guide meets you at your hotel and drives you to the winery. Once there, you taste and learn about the traditions that shaped the region's wine culture. It's a break from Samarkand's monuments (the Registan, the mausoleums, the bazaars), and a chance to see what else the city is known for among people who live there.
