  • Explore political repression museum
  • Visit new white mosque
  • Tour architectural complex in Old Town

First thing — I almost missed our guide at the hotel lobby because I was distracted by this old man selling pomegranates outside. He waved at me like he knew I was a tourist (maybe it’s the shoes?). Anyway, we started our Tashkent city tour right on time. The air still smelled faintly of bread from a nearby bakery as we drove toward Amir Temur Square. Our guide, Dilshod, joked that every Uzbek kid knows those fountains better than their own backyard. There were kids chasing pigeons and a couple taking wedding photos under the statue — not what I pictured for a city center but somehow it fit.

We wandered through the domed Amir Temur Museum next. I’ll admit I zoned out for a second staring at the patterns on the ceiling — blue on gold, dizzying if you look too long. Dilshod told us stories about Timur that weren’t in my guidebook (he called him “the original influencer,” which made me laugh). Later we passed that Soviet-era hotel shaped like an open book; honestly, it looked more like a stack of waffles to me. The Uzbekistan State Museum of Applied Art was my favorite though — you could smell wood polish and dye in the air. There’s this one carved door panel that felt cool under my fingers; nobody stopped me from touching it.

I didn’t expect to feel so much walking through the World War II memorial — there’s this statue of a grieving mother and for some reason it just hit me. It was quiet except for birds and someone sweeping leaves nearby. After that came the Chorsu Bazaar where everything changed pace: shouts from vendors, piles of spices so bright they looked fake, and the smell of fresh samsa drifting over from somewhere (I never found out where). We took the Tashkent Metro back — each station is decorated differently; one had mosaics that reminded me of underwater scenes.

The day trip around Tashkent felt both busy and strangely gentle. Maybe it was Dilshod’s stories or maybe just how people here nod at you when you pass by. Either way, there’s something about this city that lingers longer than you expect — I still think about that carved door sometimes.
