The experience

Bukhara sits on what was once the Great Silk Road, and the city itself reads like a timeline of that trade route's wealth. The tour moves through 15 stops: the Ismail Samani Mausoleum (892–943), the Chashma-Ayub mausoleum, the Ark Fortress dating to 500 AD, the Kalyan Mosque and its minaret from the 1100s, and a sequence of madrasahs built between the 1400s and 1600s. The Kalyan Minaret (1127) and the Miri-Arab Madrasah (1530–1535) anchor the central plaza. The tour also passes through the trade domes (covered bazaar structures that still function as markets), and ends at the Magoki-Attori Mosque, which dates to the 8th century.

A professional guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French or one of seven other languages and leads the entire route. Private transportation picks you up from your hotel, and bottled water is provided throughout the six to seven hours. The pace suits all fitness levels, and the sites themselves are wheelchair accessible with surfaces adapted for mobility devices. Infants can travel in a pram or stroller, and specialized infant seats are available in the vehicle if needed.
