The experience
The tour opens at the Darvaza Gas Crater, a burning pit that has blazed since 1971 in the middle of the Karakum Desert. You'll drive 280 kilometers from the Shavat border crossing, stop for photos among the sand dunes, and arrive in time to watch the crater glow as daylight fades. Dinner is a BBQ under the desert sky beside the flames: the kind of evening that stays with you. You'll sleep camp-style at Darvaza, waking to breakfast with the crater still burning in the background.
Day two moves to Ashgabat, the white-marble capital, where a full city tour takes in Nissa Fortress (an ancient Parthian stronghold and UNESCO site), the Spiritual Mosque, the Presidential and Ruhyyet Palaces, the Ertugrul Gazi Mosque, and the Arch of Neutrality. The centerpiece is the Akhalteke Horse Farm, where you'll meet the breed famous for its elegance and endurance, and you'll ride one while dressed in traditional Turkmen clothing, experiencing the role of a Turkmen horseman. An optional visit to the Alem Indoor Ferris Wheel, a Guinness record holder, rounds out the afternoon. You'll stay at a 4-star hotel in central Ashgabat.
Day three takes you east to Mary, stopping at Abiverd, an ancient Silk Road settlement, on the way. The afternoon is spent walking the ruins of Ancient Merv, once called the "Queen of the World." You'll see Sultan Kala, Gyz Kala, the Great Kyz Kala, and the Mausoleum of Sultan Sanjar: each one a remnant of the Seljuk Empire's power. Your guide narrates the history as you move through the site. Day four is the return: a drive to Turkmenabat, a crossing of the Amudarya River at the Farap border, and transfer onward. A Turkmen guide fluent in English, Spanish, Italian, French and three other languages leads the entire journey. Hotel pickup is included, and children from age one are welcome.
