The experience
What separates this tour from a single-day dash is the overnight at Besqala Yurt Camp on the Aral's edge. You arrive in Moynak on day one, tour the ship cemetery and local museum (a documentary shows what the town was before the sea vanished), then drive across the exposed seabed itself, past drilling towers and dried shells, to reach the yurt camp by evening. You swim or walk the shore, collect shells, and sleep in a traditional ger under open sky, which is the only way to feel the scale of what happened here.
Day two moves inland across the Ustyurt Plateau to sites most day tours skip. Kurgancha Kala is a XIII-century fortress hidden in the hills. Kubla Ustyurt village, 50 kilometers into the remote region, keeps camels and serves shubat (fermented camel milk) to visitors. The ancient lighthouse hill marks where traders once navigated. Below it lie the ruins of a Soviet-era settlement (hospital, cemetery, fish factory) built and abandoned during Stalin's repression. A modern bird-watching platform there overlooks the shrinking lake, where around 250 bird species still inhabit the region. Lunch is at a local café in Kungrad before you visit Mizdakhan, a XIV-century complex of mausoleums and the VI-century Gaur Kala fortress, both layered with centuries of Silk Road history.
The tour runs with an A/C 4x4 vehicle and a guide who speaks English. Half the route passes through desert with no mobile signal or settlements, so plan calls and messages before leaving Kungrad. Bring sunscreen, a hat, closed shoes and natural fabrics. The region is sunny year-round and wind can be harsh. The yurt camp provides dinner and breakfast. Other meals are on you except lunch on day two.

Is this one for you?The two-day format trades an early start and long driving for overnight immersion at the yurt camp and access to remote Silk Road sites (Kurgancha Kala, the Soviet ruins, Mizdakhan) that single-day tours cannot reach and return from before dark. Choose this if you want to sleep on the Aral's edge and explore the plateau's deeper history, not just the ship cemetery.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English and Russian.
What is the ship cemetery in Moynak, and why is it there?
Moynak was a fishing port on the Aral Sea until the sea receded in the 1960s, leaving the town stranded. The cemetery is a field of rusted fishing boats and ships left behind on dry land, a visible record of the environmental collapse. The local museum and documentary explain the town's history before and after the water vanished.
Can I actually swim in the Aral Sea on this tour?
Yes. You arrive at Besqala Yurt Camp on the Aral's shore on day one and have time to swim or walk the beach before dinner. The water is saltier than ocean water because of the concentration of minerals in what remains.
How remote is Kubla Ustyurt village, and what will I find there?
Kubla Ustyurt sits 50 kilometers into the Ustyurt Plateau and is one of the most remote settlements in the region. Local people keep camels and serve shubat, a fermented camel milk drink believed to boost immunity and aid digestion. The village also has a gas compressor station with a small airplane runway, a remnant of Soviet-era infrastructure.
What are the XIV-century sites at Mizdakhan, and how much time do we spend there?
Mizdakhan is an architectural complex from the XIV century that includes the Halifa Erejep mausoleum (XII c.), Nazlumhansuluw (XII–XIV c.), Shamun Nabi (XIX c.), and the ruins of Gaur Kala fortress, which dates back to VI B.C.–IX A.D. These are visited on day two after lunch in Kungrad, on the return drive to Nukus.
Will I have phone signal or internet during the tour?
Half the route passes through desert with no mobile network or internet because there are no settlements. Send messages and make calls in Moynak or Kungrad before you leave those towns. Some SIM cards from the YUSELL provider may work in other areas, but do not rely on connectivity once you enter the remote plateau.
What kind of accommodation is the yurt camp, and what should I expect?
Besqala Yurt Camp is a traditional nomadic settlement on the Aral's shore where you sleep in a ger (yurt) overnight. Dinner and breakfast are provided at the camp. The experience is designed to immerse you in nomadic life under the open sky, with no modern amenities beyond the basic shelter and meals.
