The experience

The route moves through layered history: Mizdakhan's mausoleum complexes and the labyrinth ruins of Gyaur-Kala sit near Kungrad, one of five ancient cities in the region. The real pivot comes at Muynak, where you walk down to the ship graveyard (abandoned vessels that mark where the Aral Sea once ran), and eat lunch at a local home before visiting the Museum of History and Ecology of the Aral Sea. From there, the off-road vehicles climb the Ustyurt Plateau, a table-like formation carved with walls that rises from what used to be the sea floor.

You overnight at the yurt camp on the plateau's edge between the Ustyurt and the Aral Sea, with dinner and breakfast included. The second day takes you to Kurgancha-Kala, the ruins of a medieval market built in the desert to serve trade between the Khorezm Kingdom and nomads, and to Kubla-Ustyurt, a remote settlement where you can visit a camel herder's house and try camel milk. The final stop is Urga, an abandoned fishing village with Russian Orthodox cemetery ruins, a decrepit factory and salt-covered lakeshore: a landscape that feels frozen in time. Lunch at a roadside café in Kungrad precedes the drive back to Nukus.

The tour includes air-conditioned vehicle transport, all entry fees, tent equipment and amenities at the yurt camp, and four meals with snacks and non-alcoholic drinks. Your guide speaks English and meets you for pickup in Nukus. The sites around the Ustyurt have been off-limits to the public for years, so the archaeological and natural detail here is not easily reached on your own.
