The Experience
The first thing I noticed was the smell—kind of like spray paint and sweet cafecito drifting from somewhere nearby. We climbed into this electric buggy right in the middle of Wynwood, Miami’s art district, and our guide Luis (he’s actually painted some of these walls) just grinned and said, “Ready?” The seat was softer than I expected. As we rolled out, the colors hit me all at once—giant faces, wild shapes, even a wall covered in what looked like neon feathers. It’s loud but not noisy, if that makes sense; there’s music from an open window and someone arguing about soccer in Spanish down the block.
Luis knew everyone. He’d wave or shout something I couldn’t catch to another artist setting up ladders. At one stop he pointed out a mural he did last year—a huge blue jaguar—and told us how it almost got painted over until the neighbors protested. I tried to say “jaguar” in Spanish and he laughed (I’m still not sure I got it right). We could hop off whenever we wanted for photos or just to touch the wall—some paint was still rough under my fingers. The sun bounced off everything so bright I had to squint; maybe bring sunglasses if you go.
We ended up at Wynwood Walls after about an hour, but honestly I could’ve kept riding around just listening to Luis talk about which artists are feuding or where to find the best empanadas nearby. There’s something about seeing street art from a buggy—with an actual artist driving—that makes you feel like you’re part of it for a second. I still think about that blue jaguar sometimes when I see graffiti back home.
