The experience

Li handed me a helmet and grinned, “Pick whichever bike feels right: no rush.” I went for the blue one, mostly because it looked forgiving if I wobbled (which I did, immediately). Our group was small, just five of us, and Li somehow remembered everyone’s names after the first introduction. We started in the Cargo District where someone had painted sunflowers on a shipping container. The air smelled faintly like coffee from somewhere nearby. I caught myself smiling before we’d even left the lot.

Riding an e-bike around Wilmington is way easier than I expected. You still pedal, but it’s like the bike quietly cheers you on with every push. We zipped into Greenfield Lake Park: the light changed under the trees, all dappled and cool. At one point Li pointed out a gator sunning itself on the far bank (“Don’t worry, he’s lazy,” she said). There was this moment when we crossed a wooden bridge and everything went quiet except for tires humming and birds arguing in the reeds. It felt good to just be moving, you know?

We rolled through downtown next: cobblestones under our wheels, old brick buildings leaning into each other. Someone asked about that “One Tree Hill” bridge and Li told us how fans still come by for photos (I’ve never seen the show but now I kind of want to). The Soda Pop District break was perfect timing. I tried a scoop at Wandering Cone Creamery (the pistachio tasted real, not fake green) while others ducked into Hi-Wire Brewing or just stretched their legs. No pressure to do anything special. Just enough time to notice how locals wave at each other or how every mural seems to have its own story.

Afterwards, some kept riding while a couple of us lingered in Carolina Place: Li showed us her favorite house with creaky porch steps and wild jasmine out front. The whole thing lasted about two and a half hours but didn’t feel rushed or touristy. I still think about that silent stretch by the lake and how easy it felt to see so much of Wilmington from a bike seat.
